16 Tube Stations Get Listed Status

We all have a favourite tube station, er, don’t we?  Well how about all the images of Sherlock Holmes on the tiles at Baker Street?  Or how about the lovely Arnos Grove Station above, which was designed by modernist architect Charles Holden, and is among the 16 stations listed or upgraded by English Heritage this week.

Most of those listed are clad in the ox blood red blocks that first gave the tube a distinct corporate identity, such as Oxford Circus, Russell Square and Covent Garden.

The listed stations are recognised for their contribution to London’s ‘architectural story’, so as you travel around London today, spare a thought for the design around you!
