London on Film – London Town

In 1946 the Rank Organisation released Britain’s first techinicolour musical ‘London Town’, directed by Wesley Ruggles.  Shot at Shepperton Studios, so much money was lavished on the production that it became a legendary financial flop.  These days however, it is a treat for nostalgia fans with a line up of stars including music hall legend, Sid Field, singer Petula Clark and in her film debut, ‘Genevieve’ star Kay Kendall.  The songs featured include cockney classics like ‘Any Old Iron’ and music hall favourites like ‘My Old Man (said Follow the Van)’.

The film was finally released on DVD last year and the soundtrack is also available.

The brilliant clip below shows Pearly Kings and Queens enjoying a knees up!
