It’s great to hear of a new cinema opening in the heart of London, and it’s a cinema with an amazing historical pedigree at that! The Regent Street Cinema was the location for the first performance in Britain of the Lumiere brothers first films in 1896. It was also the cinema which screened the first X-rated film in the UK in 1951 (‘Life Begins Tomorrow’).
Now part of the University of Westminster, the cinema will screen double bills, new and classic British films, world cinema and act as a platform for the work of students. The restoration of the building looks gorgeous, with a welcoming bar area.
The Regent Street Cinema opens tomorrow 6th April, with ‘Lambert and Stamp’ a 2014 documentary about the two men who discovered West London mods, The Who. On Thursday 7th April there’s a screening of the 1939 film ‘Only Angels Have Wings’ with Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Rita Hayworth.
